Chemical processes
Steam reforming:
Steam reforming is a combustion reaction through which hydrogen is derived from hydrocarbons such as coal, propane, and methane. This process is used for industrial production of hydrogen for use in other reactions like the synthesis of ammonia. This takes place when a hydrocarbon like methane comes in contact with both a metal catalyst, and steam heated to extreme temperatures. This creates a reaction through which the methane becomes hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The chemical equation for this reaction is CH4 + H2O ⇌CO + 3 H2.This is important because it allows hydrogen to be created at a
low price for industrial uses.Another form of separating hydrogen is electrolysis however it is not commonly used for the production of hydrogen for industrial uses.
Electrolysis:
This is a process through which both hydrogen and oxygen are separated from water and or is a decomposition reaction. This is done be passing a current of electricity through the water to break the bonds between the hydrogen and the oxygen. The chemical equation for this is energy + 2 H2O -> O2 + 2 H2 .This is imortant because the hydrogen is then used for other purposes like fuel cells or processes like hydrogen combustion ,which can be used for both industrial and domestic use.
